IV Sedation Dentistry at Westmount Dental

For patients with severe dental anxiety or those undergoing longer, more complex treatments, IV sedation offers a fast-acting, deeply calming solution. This advanced sedation technique helps you stay relaxed and comfortable while remaining responsive—so you can receive the care you need without fear or stress.

Why Choose IV Sedation?

IV (intravenous) sedation is an ideal option for:

  • Patients with intense dental anxiety or phobia
  • Individuals undergoing multiple or lengthy procedures
  • Those with a strong gag reflex or difficulty staying still
  • Patients requiring a higher level of sedation while remaining conscious

IV sedation creates a dream-like state of calm, allowing for a more pleasant and manageable dental experience.

What to Expect: The IV Sedation Process

    • Pre-Treatment Evaluation:

Your medical history and current health are reviewed in detail to ensure IV sedation is suitable for you. You’ll receive instructions regarding fasting and post-treatment transportation.

    • Monitoring Setup:

Before your procedure begins, we connect you to monitoring equipment to track vital signs—heart rate, oxygen levels, and blood pressure—throughout your visit.

    • Sedative Administration:

A small IV is placed, typically in your hand or arm. The sedative is delivered directly into your bloodstream, taking effect within seconds.

    • Calm, Conscious Sedation:

You’ll feel deeply relaxed and at ease, yet remain responsive to gentle prompts. Many patients remember little to nothing of the procedure afterwards.

    • Treatment & Monitoring:

While your dental team performs the necessary procedures, a dedicated clinician monitors your comfort and safety throughout.

    • Post-Treatment Recovery:

After the procedure, you’ll rest briefly in our recovery area. Though the effects wear off quickly, you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you home, as drowsiness and delayed coordination are normal for a few hours.

Safety and Benefits of IV Sedation

IV sedation is administered by our specially trained clinicians using strict safety protocols. It offers:

  • Immediate, adjustable sedation levels for maximum comfort
  • Reduced anxiety, pain, and stress
  • Faster treatment times, as patients are more relaxed and cooperative
  • Limited memory of the procedure, ideal for anxious or phobic individuals

Possible minor side effects include temporary grogginess or mild nausea. We carefully screen each patient to minimise risks and tailor sedation safely.

Frequently Asked Questions
How will I feel after IV sedation? +

The effects of sedation will begin to subside after about 30 minutes of you having your procedure. You should feel completely normal again after 24 hours. One of the (many!) fantastic things about sedation is there is generally no ‘hangover’ sensation, something that is closely associated with going under general anaesthetic.

Whilst you are awake for the duration of the time you are sedated, it’s completely normal to forget some of your procedures. This is due to the amnesic effects of the sedative.

Who is best suited to IV sedation? +

Patients with a history of dental phobia make excellent candidates for IV sedation. In fact, sedation can work wonders on how a person perceives the dentist in the future. It’s not uncommon for patients to admit they no longer need the help of sedation to undergo a procedure after having it just once.

As dentists, we find that the vast majority of individuals with dental phobia suffer due to an adverse experience with the dentist in the past. In many cases, merely showing someone with a dental phobia that they’re in caring and considerate hands is sufficient to help them foster new, positive feelings towards the dentist. However, if you need an extra helping hand to relax, sedation is available to you at Westmount.

How long will I be under? +

Implant surgery can take between 1 and 2 hours. You will feel the effects of sedation for the duration of your procedure.

Will I be under anaesthetic? +

Yes. We will administer a local anaesthetic at the site where your surgeon will place your implant or implants. This is administered once the sedative takes effect.

Can I drive home after IV sedation? +

As you will still feel a little drowsy once the effects start to wear off, you will need to ask someone to drive you home after your implant surgery. We will request that you agree to this as part of the consent and treatment forms we ask you to complete prior to your surgery.

How long does it take for the effects to wear off? +

The rate at which the sedative wears off will differ slightly from person to person. However, most people normally recover within 30 to 60 minutes and may feel a little drowsy for several hours afterwards.

Is there a professional sedation dentist at Westmount Dental? +

As a dominating implant clinic in the Northeast, sedation is one of the most important services we offer our patients, as oral surgery is something we do every day. You will be in the capable hands of a professional sedation dentist who will work alongside your oral surgeon. Their role is to monitor you at all times, making sure your vitals, blood pressure and response to the sedative are all completely as they should be.

Do you offer finance for dental treatment? +

Yes, we offer interest-free and interest-bearing finance so that high-quality dental care is accessible to all our patients.

I’m embarrassed about coming in – can you help? +

We understand that coming in to seek implant-based treatments is a huge life event. Our clinicians are compassionate people who encounter many patients who feel self-conscious about the condition of their mouths. We understand how debilitating lost teeth can be, particularly on your confidence levels and your everyday happiness. We are very happy to book you in for a practice tour or an appointment with our treatment coordinator in a non-clinical setting before your consultation.

Who performs my treatment? +

Multiple members of the Westmount Dental clinical team will be involved in the planning and treating your dental care. This includes dentists, dental nurses, dental technicians and sedation dentists, who work seamlessly together to deliver predictable results.
